Shirley Ann Matousek

Shirley A. Matousek, 78, of St. Paul, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Memorial Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Joseph Javorsky and Vicar Casey Lieneman will officiate. Legion Auxiliary honors will be conducted by Carl Mogensen American Legion Auxiliary Unit 119 of St. Paul. Inurnment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul. Mrs. Matousek chose to be cremated. The family will greet friends Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Peters Funeral Home in St. Paul. Mrs. Matousek was born on May 25, 1932, at Burwell, the daughter of Austin and Susan (Gericke) Anderson. She is survived by her husband, Donald R. Matousek of St. Paul; and a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Chris Matousek of Overland Park, KS. Shirley grew up in Burwell where she attended Burwell Public Schools and graduated from Burwell High School in 1950. She then moved to St. Paul where she worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. She was united in marriage to Donald R. Matousek on May 22, 1954, at St. Paul. The couple first lived in St. Paul where she continued to work for Northwestern Bell. In 1955, they moved to Albion where she worked for Kohtz Implement, Albion Tire and Auto and Albion Livestock Market. She then worked in the Boone County Treasurer’s Office for 15 years before retiring in 1995. At that time the couple moved to Grand Island and in 1999 returned to St. Paul, where she lived the rest of her life. She was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and the church circle, Carl Mogensen American Legion Auxiliary Unit 119 of St. Paul and VFW Auxiliary Post 736 of Albion. She helped with BINGO at the VA Medical Center and Veterans Home in Grand Island and at Heritage Living Center in St. Paul. Shirley enjoyed bowling and golfing. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Jack Anderson; and two sisters, Ruth Runyan and Colleen Green. Memorials are suggested to the family’s choice.
