Rosella Anne Hiegel

Rosella Anne (Niemoth) Hiegel, 90, of Grand Island, formerly of St. Libory, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2023, surrounded by her loving family at Good Samaritan Society in Grand Island.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023, at Zion Lutheran Church in Worms. The Rev. Craig Niemeier will officiate. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery at Worms. The service will be livestreamed on Zion Lutheran's YouTube page.

Visitation will be held Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church. Memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church.

Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is assisting the family.

Rosella Anne Niemoth was born June 8, 1933, at St. Libory, NE, on the family farm in Howard County, to Hugo and Marie (Meyer) Niemoth.

She was baptized on June 25, 1933, at Zion Lutheran Church at St. Libory (Worms), Nebraska. She was confirmed at the same church on April 14, 1946. Her confirmation verse was Psalm 143:10 “Teach me to do thy will, for thou art my God: Thy Spirit is good, lead me into the land of uprightness”.

She attended District 26 Howard County rural school K-1. Zion Lutheran School at Worms 2-8. She was a 1950 graduate of Concordia High School in Seward, NE. She then attended Concordia Teachers College (Concordia University) Seward and after graduating she taught at Ascension Lutheran School in Charlotte, North Carolina.

She married Robert Rudolph Hiegel on Aug. 10, 1952 at Zion Lutheran Church in Worms. They lived in Orange, CA, where Rob was stationed with the US Marine Corps. They farmed near Bayard, NE, from 1954 to 1957 and moved to St. Libory in 1957. They retired from farming in 2000 and continued to live on the farm until 2018 when they moved to Good Samaritan Senior Living in Grand Island. Rob passed away on Jan. 24, 2019.

She is a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church at Worms where she was a member of the Evening LWML and Lutheran Laymen’s League. She also taught Sunday School and sang in the choir for many years. She was also a member of the Carl Mogensen American Legion Auxiliary Unit 119 of St. Paul.

She enjoyed her family, serving her Lord and helping her husband farm. She and Rob also enjoyed square dancing. After moving to Good Samaritan she enjoyed playing BINGO and pitch and visiting with all the residents.

Rosella is survived by three children and spouses, Thomas and Linda Hiegel of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Shari and Robin Stepanek of Bethany, OK, Jack and Jennifer Hiegel of Louisville, KY; 11 grandchildren, Ryan, Jordan, Nathan (Sade) Hiegel, Chad (Amanda) Stepanek, Neil (Samantha) Stepanek, Kathleen (Travis) Hubbuch, Victoria, Elise, Jackson, Nick and Blake Hiegel; great-grandchildren, Alison Stepanek, Eliott Stepanek, Lincoln Stepanek, Ralston Stepanek, Miah Hiegel, Charliee Hiegel, Ryker Hiegel, Lily Garcia, Isaiah Hamilton, Calvin Hubbuch and Marshall Hubbuch.

Rosella is also survived by a brother-in-law, Clarence Hiegel of Grand Island; sister-in-law, JoAn Hiegel of Flower Mound, TX and numerous nieces and nephews, who dearly loved their “Aunt Rosie”.

In addition to her husband, Rob, she was preceded in death by her parents; brother and sister-in-law, Wilmer and Verna Mae Niemoth; sisters and brothers-in-law, Evelyn and Harold Bader and Jean and Fred Bangert; brother-in-law, Lee Hiegel; sister-in-law, Norma Hiegel Kramer and sister-in-law, Charlene Hiegel.

The bible text on Rosella and Rob’s tombstone at Zion Lutheran Cemetery is the text of their wedding sermon, Psalm 37:5 “Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and He shall bring it to pass”.
