I never had Mr. Olin as a teacher, he was Principal at SPHS when I was there in the late 60's and early 70's. He was and is one of my all-time favorite people! He treated us with respect, compassion and kindness. The world has lost a wonderful advocate for kids. My thoughts are with his family.

My deepest sympathy. Mr. Olin was a wonderful teacher. He had great expectations of all of his students. He encouraged you to think and look beyond the words you read but into their deeper meaning. Thank you for being an exceptional teacher and a good friend to my parents. Cheri

I want to share the important role that Mr. Olin played in my life with his family and friends. After attending my 25 year class reunion this summer,I have been remembering my years at St. Paul High School and thinking about how my life was affected by those experiences. Mr. Olin inspired me to become an English teacher. He taught me a lot about reading, writing, and myself in Composition and Senior English. He challenged all students to think and to excel. We read difficult material that pushed our abilities, and we discussed and debated a wide variety of issues that came from the books we read. Mr. Olin stimulated the conversation and pushed us to question the literature, ourselves, and each other. I remember expressing my interest in teaching to Mr. Olin and relating the fear that I would be bored teaching the same thing every year. He smiled and said that the students made classes different every year. He was never bored because the students made it interesting. Those words stayed with me as I struggled to find a major and career. After I began teaching high school senior English in Columbus, I did write to Mr. Olin to let him know how much he inspired and encouraged me to pursue teaching and the study of English. He was a great teacher who helped shape my life. I now teach college writing and literature, and I still give him credit for shaping the person I have become.
