Melvin E. Poss

Melvin E. Poss, 74, of Scotia, died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, at the Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. The Revs. Martha Voigt and Bruce Phillips will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Scotia. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Poss was born on Dec. 30, 1937, on the family farm northeast of Cotesfield in Greeley County, the son of Fred and Grace (Gydesen) Poss. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Poss of Scotia; his children and spouses, Dale Poss of St. Louis, MO, Tammie and Allen Glaser of Kearney, Karen and Gary Kring of Axtell and Danny and Kristi Poss of Scotia; one sister and brother-in-law, Erma and Bill Neel of North Loup; two brothers, Donald Poss of Wolbach and Kenneth Poss and Mary Lou Navratil of Greeley; and sister-in-law, Jean Poss of Elba. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, Brittney Rice, Blake Glaser, Brooke Glaser, Hailey Kring, Hannah Kring, Creighton Kring, Nolan Poss, Nathan Poss, Neleigh Poss and Natalie Poss; an aunt, Wilma Poss of St. Paul; and Elizabeth's siblings and spouses, Peggy and Tim Jones of Kearney and John and Jo Horky of Grand Island; and many nieces and nephews. Melvin attended Greeley County rural schools and upon completing his education, he farmed with his family. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth D. Horky on June 16, 1962, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in St. Paul. The couple first farmed northeast of Cotesfield until Feb. 1966, when they moved to a farm southeast of Scotia, where they farmed until his death. Farming was truly Melvin's life. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Scotia. He enjoyed being outside, attending farm sales, dancing, playing cards, casino trips, and his machinery and livestock were very important to him. Melvin had a great sense of humor and he always said that he “loved to work”. He also dearly loved his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Richard Poss; brother, Darwin Poss; in-laws, Gilbert and Bethel Horky; and brother-in-law, Tommy Horky. Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
