ST. PAUL – Mary E. Schmidt-Kment, 60, of St. Paul died Wednesday, Jan 9, 2008, at the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Ray Kosmicki will officiate. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Ord Cemetery in Ord. Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church with a 7 p.m. vigil service. Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Schmidt-Kment was born on Aug. 25, 1947, at Ord, the daughter of Elmer and Lorraine (Duda) Lukesh. She is survived by her husband, Emil R. Kment of St. Paul; her mother, Lorraine Lukesh of Lincoln; two sons, Darrell Schmidt of Grand Island and Carl Schmidt of Papillion; one brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Linda Lukesh of Lincoln; and two sisters and one brother-in-law, Kadi Lukesh of Lincoln and Karen and Darien Cox of Grand Island. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Kaitlynn, Gage and Abigail Schmidt. Mary grew up in Ord and attended St. Mary’s parochial school and was a 1965 graduate of Ord High School. She then attended the Kearney Beauty Academy, graduating in 1966 and receiving her instructor of cosmetology credentials in 1967. She was united in marriage to Edwin C. Schmidt on Aug. 22, 1967, at Phillipsburg, Kansas. Mary worked as a cosmetology instructor and was the owner of Mary’s Magic Mirror in Dalton. In 1981, she moved to Farwell and later to St. Paul where she worked at Merchant’s Salon for 8 years. She was united in marriage to Emil R. Kment on April 11, 1996, at St. Paul. She then worked at the Red Carpet Salon which she later purchased and operated until her health forced her to retire. She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church where she was involved in the music ministry and was a member of the Council of Catholic Women. She was a longtime member of the W.F.L.A. Lodge No. 152 of Farwell, having served as secretary. She was also a past advisory board member of the Western Nebraska Technical College. For many years, Mary volunteered at Heritage Living Center by styling hair and singing for the residents. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and enjoyed her neighborhood children. Mary also enjoyed to cook and loved her cats. She was preceded in death by her father, Elmer Lukesh and her first husband, Edwin C. Schmidt. Memorials are suggested to the St. Paul EMT’s or the St. Mary’s School of Ord.
