James Allan “Jim” Mamot was born on February 24, 1943, to Zenon W. and Rosella C. (Boehle) Mamot in St. Paul, Nebraska.
Jim was a lifelong resident of St. Libory. As a child, he attended a small country school located on the southwest corner of the family feedlot before attending and graduating from Grand Island Central Catholic in Grand Island, in 1961. After graduation, he began farming full time with his parents and his brother, Larry, growing the business of Mamot and Sons that became Mamot Feedlot.
Jim was united in marriage to Annette Tibbs in 1963; to this union, four children were born: Allan W., Rebecca S., Kevin B., and Brenda L. The couple later divorced.
In November of 1973, Jim was introduced to Viola Hutchison Sowle on a blind date. On July 22, 1978, the couple married at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island, and thereafter were active members of the St. Libory Catholic Church community. Jim and Vi enjoyed traveling each year on business and pleasure trips, purchasing cattle for the feedlot and visiting with friends and family along the way.
Jim will be remembered for his integrity, his handshake as his binding word, his life’s work of shepherding the Mamot cattle and farming operation, his tireless work ethic, his sharp wit and mind, and his hard-won business acumen. Along with his son, Kevin, he was known for his excellent judgement of cattle and grain markets. He will continue to be admired, respected, and emulated by others for his grit, a trait best illustrated by a running list of life events he maintained over the decades, excerpted here:
1956–June: operation—appendicitis 1965–June: fell with horse (wanted to die) 1976–April: mumps 1980–May: son Allan killed in car accident 1984–August: lightning burnt down office building 1993–February: open-heart surgery 2002–April: one stent, two balloons, Bryan East, Lincoln 2019–December: beginning of cancer
There, through all of life’s trials were mainstays that carried Jim forward and brought him meaning, comfort, and laughter: his Catholic faith, his family, his friends, and his dedication to the family farm. One of his great joys was conversation. He loved visiting with close friends and having lengthy discussions about the latest issues.
Jim is survived by his wife, Vi, of 47 years; son, Kevin B.; and daughters, Brenda (Tharin) Peters and LaRae (Doug) Predmore. Step-sons: Monty (Diane) and Forrest Sowle. Step-daughter: Colleen (James) Griffis.
Grandchildren: Natasha (Greg) O’Neill; Kyle (Kayla) Peters; Amanda Richardson; Kayla (Thomas) Geiger; Mason Mamot; Hana Mamot; and Rose Mamot. Step-grandchildren: Shawn Sowle; Kristi Sowle; Sarah Sowle; Aaron Sowle; Marcus Sowle; Torrance Sowle; Cora Menke; and Lana (Payton) Placke. Great-grandchildren: 18.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Zenon and Rosella Mamot; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ted and Susan Hutchison; son, Allan W. Mamot; daughter, Rebecca S. Mamot; and brother, Larry.
