Evangeline Gladys “Vangie” Markvicka Obermiller, 93, died peacefully Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul, surrounded by her loving family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 5, 2026, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Vince Parsons will celebrate the Mass, assisted by Deacon Neil Baquet. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m., at the church, with a 7 p.m. parish rosary.
In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials are suggested to Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the St. Paul Fire Department and EMTs, per Vangie’s wishes.
Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is assisting the family.
Vangie was born September 22, 1932, on the family farm west of Farwell, the daughter of Joseph and Agnes (Derchowski) Jerabek. She received her education at Country School District No. 24 and later graduated from Ashton High School in 1950.
On February 15, 1954, Vangie was united in marriage to Earl Markvicka at St. Francis Catholic Church in Ashton. The couple first lived in Omaha before moving to a farm west of St. Paul, where they lived and raised their family for the next 31 years. In the early 1980s, they moved into St. Paul. Earl passed away on October 2, 1989.
Vangie was later united in marriage to Gaylord Obermiller on May 14, 1993, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. She moved to Gaylord’s farm near Dannebrog, and the couple later moved back into St. Paul, where Vangie made her home for the remainder of her life. Gaylord passed away January 23, 2008.
Over the years, Vangie worked as a waitress at Nesiba’s Café and later at Ron & Company’s Supper Club.
Vangie was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of America since 1975, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 119 of St. Paul since 1965, and the ZCBJ Fraternal Lodge 152 of Farwell.
Vangie enjoyed playing cards, bingo, and word search puzzles, as well as spending time on her tablet playing solitaire. She also loved traveling and going on cruises, and could often be found watching Wheel of Fortune and other game shows. Most of all, she cherished spending time with her family.
Vangie is survived by her children and spouses, Diana Markvicka of St. Paul, Timothy Markvicka and Connie Reimers of Grand Island, Diane and Richard Reed of St. Paul, Julie Rasmussen of St. Paul, and Mark and Sandy Markvicka of Fargo, N.D.; 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Ambrose of St. Libory; and brother, John and Dee Jerabek of Ashton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Earl Markvicka and Gaylord Obermiller; son, Mike Markvicka; grandson, Kenny Markvicka; and former son-in-law, Richard Rasmussen.
