He grew up in the Ord area, attended Ord High School and graduated in 1968. He was united in marriage to Pamela Hurlbert, his high school sweetheart, on August 14th, 1971 in Ord, NE. He attended the University of Nebraska where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1972. He became a secondary English and Speech Teacher and started the girls’ basketball program in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. He went on to become the principal, athletic director, and the superintendent at Ewing, NE. During this time, he also received a Master of Education Degree in 1977 from the University of Nebraska and an Educational Specialist Degree in Ed. Adm. in 1985. In 1987, the family moved to St. Paul where he became the superintendent of St. Paul Public Schools. He held this position for 24 years until he retired in 2011. Doug was a member of the American Association of School Administrators, Nebraska Council of School Administrators, Nebraska Council of School Administrators, Phi Delta Kappa, Nebraska Special Education Accountability Commission, and Nebraska Rural Community School Association. He also served as the Howard County School Superintendent, and served on the school crisis team, and the school improvement committee. Doug had a fulfilling career of 39 years in education. He was passionate about the value of education and strived to provide positive leadership for this to be obtained. Doug also lived a full life as a son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. He was an avid Husker football fan and rarely missed watching a game. The summers found him outside as much as possible. He loved camping, hunting, canoeing, golfing and fishing. However, his family and especially the grandkids were his pride and joy. He is survived by his wife Pam, of St. Paul; children and spouses, Kent and Vicki Ackles of Mesa, Arizona, Kylee and Kevin Moormann of Friendswood, TX; five grandchildren, Scarlett Moormann, Prescott Moormann, Briar Grace Moormann, and Sloane Ackles; siblings and spouses, Rich and Joyce Ackles of Denver, Deb and Jerome Polacek of Crete, and Lori and Pat Swift of Minneapolis, MN. He is also survived by nephews, a niece, cousins and many wonderful neighbors and friends. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Norma Ackles.
I am so sorry to hear this news I was a student of Mr Ackles in Cedar Rapids; he held the "favorite teacher" position through my four years of high school. I also babysit for Kent when he was a baby. He was a wonderful teacher and friend. My sympathies to all of his family.

Saddened to see that Doug had passed. Our condolences to family. Always enjoyed seeing Doug at educational and social gatherings. Never had to guess as to which side of the fence Doug was on. Always appreciated his willingness to share. Mike and Karen Zulkoski

Doug was my administrator during my days as a high school English teacher in St. Paul. He was a terrific leader, colleague, and friend. He made sure I (and every teacher) had what they needed to meet the needs of their students. He took an interest in our personal lives and was always willing to help when it was needed. My greatest memories of Doug are on the golf course. I enjoyed every minute of every round of golf I got to play with him. He was always good for a laugh, an ear to listen, and great advice when it was needed. My thoughts and condolences are with the Ackles family. Matt Robinson-Christensen English, St. Paul 1999-2001

I was fortunate to work with Doug during my six years in Ewing. I started my career in administration because of his encouragement. I will always remember Doug for his devotion to family, his dedication to his work in education and his infectious smile and sense of humor. Doug was a great friend. We shared many good times playing golf and coaching together in Ewing. My condolences to Pam, Kylee and Kent. Kim and I send our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Mr. Ackles gave me my first start as an educator at St. Paul! I was honored to work alongside him for two years. He was a fabulous administrator, and I always knew he was doing things right for his staff and students! I'll never forget the golf outings Rick Peters, Mr. Ackles and I went on while I was there in St. Paul. We shared some laughs especially about how bad I was at golf!! My sincerest condolences to the Ackles family. Mr. Ackles will be missed by all! Matthew Uher (Former English Teacher, St. Paul High School: 1997-1999)

Doug was a good friend during the years we worked together in Ewing. There are many coaching stories, others when he served as principal, and still others from time spent on the Elkhorn River with other gung ho faculty canoers. He worked hard, had a great family, and a soft-hearted wife. There were many lessons that I learned from my time with Mr. Ackles. We will miss him. My thoughts and prayers go out to Pam and the kids.
