Douglas L. “Doug” Wegner, 70, of Palmer, died Saturday, July 23, 2022, surrounded by his family, at CHI Health St. Francis in Grand Island.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Vince Parsons will officiate. Casual attire is requested by the family. A Celebration of Life and meal will be held at 12 Noon at the American Legion Club in Palmer.

Private family inurnment will be held at a later date in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Palmer.

Memorials are suggested to the Palmer Youth Sports Association or to the family for later designation.

Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is assisting the family.

Doug was born on Dec. 1, 1951, in Grand Island, the son of Dallas and LaNelle (Burke) Wegner. He grew up on a farm east of Palmer, attended Palmer Public School and graduated from Palmer High School in 1970. He then attended Wayne State College, where he graduated in 1974. Upon graduation he started farming.

He was united in marriage to Kathy S. Simonson on March 31, 1978, in Palmer. The couple lived and farmed near Palmer their entire married life.

Doug was member of the United Methodist Church, Sons of American Legion and Service Center coffee club, all in Palmer.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved attending his grandkids activities and ball games. Doug always had treats for the dogs and Skittles for the grandkids in his truck.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy Wegner of Palmer; mother, LaNelle Wegner of St. Paul; children and spouses, Ashley and Blaine Cornelius and Neil and Kate Wegner, all of Palmer; grandchildren, Harper, Hensley, Huxten, Connar and Beau; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dallas and Carolyn Wegner of Kearney and Dave and Lois Wegner of Palmer; father-in-law, Barney O’Hern of Palmer; and Kathy’s siblings and spouses, Ron and Vicki Simonson of Palmer, Shelley and Dwight Pflipsen of Lenexa, KS, Randy and Monica Simonson of Palmer, Bryan and Lynn Simonson of Grand Island and Mike O’Hern of Grand Island; and his trusty sidekick, Hank the dog.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dallas Wegner; in-laws, Dean Simonson and Maxine Simonson O’Hern; and his beloved dog, Britta.
