Delbert Jonak, 89, of Ashton, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2021, surrounded by his family, in his home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Paplin. The Rev. Richard L. Piontkowski will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery in Paplin.


Visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church, with a 7 p.m. Rosary.


In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials are suggested to “Friends of Paplin” and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery.


Peters Funeral Home of Loup City is assisting the family.


Delbert was born on Dec. 13, 1931, at Ashton, the son of Joseph J. and Cashmere (Stanczyk) Jonak. He grew up on the family farm and attended Howard County rural schools. He then farmed with his father and also on his own. He later went to work in Wyoming until returning to take over the family farm, after the death of his father.


He was united in marriage to Renee A. Gappa on April 19, 1960, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Paplin. The couple lived, farmed and raised cattle their entire married life, northeast of Ashton.


Delbert was a member of St. Josaphat’s Catholic Church in Loup City and a former member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Paplin where he was a former trustee and member of the cemetery board. He had also served on the Cotesfield Elevator Board and was a member of the Ashton Coyote Club.


Delbert loved spending time with all his grandkids and working with his grandsons. He enjoyed tractor pulls, coyote hunting, playing poker, polka dancing, watching westerns and telling stories and jokes.


He is survived by his wife, Renee of Ashton; children and spouses, Bonnie Badura of Ashton, Nancy and Steve Johnson of Wichita, KS, Cheryl and Darwin Dimmitt of Grand Island, Joe & Diane Jonak of Elba, Denise and Mike Smith of Holdrege, and Meredith and Troy Lindstrom of Loomis; 28 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren with another on the way; and brother, Virgil Jonak of Shelley, ID.


He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Steve Badura; grandchildren, Meagan Smith, Taylor and Logan Cooper; sister, Luana Salerno; infant brother, Lambert Jonak; and brothers, Reginald Jonak and Emmanuel Jonak.
