Betty J. Schipman

Betty Joan Schipman, 96, of Grand Island, died Friday, June 24, 2022, at Good Samaritan Society – Grand Island Village.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 2022, at Zion Lutheran Church in Worms. The Rev. Craig K. Niemeier will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Worms.

Visitation will be held one hour before time of service at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.

Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is assisting the family.

Betty was born Dec. 8, 1925 at Palmer, the daughter of Louie and Sophie (Kurz) Spangenberg. She grew up on a farm near Palmer and attended District #39 rural school in Howard County. She later attended St. Paul High School, graduating in 1944. She then taught in rural schools for several years.

She was united in marriage to Leonard Schipman on April 19, 1947, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The couple farmed their entire married life and she was a cook for Zion Lutheran parochial school in Worms from 1962 to 1973. She was also a longtime representative of Stanley Home Products. Leonard died on April 7, 1989. Betty continued to live on the farm until moving to Grand Island, where she lived the rest of her life.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, a charter member of the Jolly Wives extension club for over 50 years, the Platt-Duetsche and Farmers Union Ladies Guild.

She is survived by two daughters and two sons-in-law, Roger Nathan of Madison, Kathleen and Kenneth Boettcher of Georgetown, TX and Donna Dingwerth of Grand Island; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Carolyn Nathan; son-in-law, Jerry Dingwerth; and sisters, Ella Wollenhaupt and Frances Wichman.
