Archie J. Ambrose, 87, of St. Libory, died Friday, Sept. 9, 2022, surrounded by his family at the Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Libory’s Catholic Church in St. Libory. The Revs. Sidney B. Bruggeman and Richard Piontkowski will concelebrate the Mass. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church with a 7 p.m. parish rosary.
Memorials are suggested to St. Libory’s Catholic Church or to the family for later designation.
Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is assisting the family.
Archie was born on May 2, 1935, at St. Paul, the son of Joe and Anna (Marfica) Ambrose. He grew up on a farm west of St. Paul and attended Howard County rural schools. In 1949, the family moved to Farwell where he graduated from Farwell High School in 1955. He farmed with his family until the drought in the 1950’s and then moved to Montana to work for a couple of years.
He was united in marriage to Betty A. Jerabek on Oct. 5, 1957, at Paplin. The couple lived and worked at Taylor Ranch near Grand Island, later moving to a farm northeast of St. Libory where he raised Charolais cattle and hogs. He semi-retired in 2015.
He was a member of St. Libory’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1918 and was the past president of Union Grain in St. Libory.
He enjoyed western tv shows, polka music, yardwork, gardening, watching Husker football and loved putting up hay, farming, riding his 4-wheeler and his dogs.
He is survived by his wife, Betty of St. Libory; children and spouses, Jan and Sam Ortega of Grand Island, Gary and Nancy Ambrose of Palmer, Greg and Valerie Ambrose of St. Paul and Janelle and Randy Kunze of Grand Island; 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Irene Meyer of St. Libory and Joan Ziegler of Colby, KS; sister-in-law, Vange Obermiller of St. Paul; brother-in-law and spouse, Joe & Dee Jerabek of Ashton; and his dog, Marley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Louis Sintek; infant daughter, Jill Ambrose; sister and brothers-in-law, Katherine and Don Lacy, Harvey Meyer and LeRoy Ziegler; brother, Don Ambrose; and in-laws, Joe & Agnes Jerabek.
