Phyllis Alta Mostek, 92, of Loup City, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2025, at Brookefield Park in St. Paul.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2025, at St. Josaphat’s Catholic Church in Loup City. Rev. Richard L. Piontkowski will celebrate the Mass.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church, with recitation of the rosary beginning at 5 p.m.
Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Loup City.
Memorials are suggested to St. Josaphat’s Catholic Church or to the family for later designation.
Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is assisting the family.
Alta was born on July 29, 1933, on a farm east of Loup City, the daughter of Andrew and Gertrude (Krolikowski) Waskowiak. She was one of eight Waskowiak daughters. She grew up on the family farm and attended Schaupps Country School before going on to Loup City High School, where she graduated with the class of 1950. After graduation, she worked at the Fredrick Hotel and the Ideal Café in Loup City.
She was united in marriage to Clemence T. Mostek on Feb. 16, 1953, at St. Josaphat’s Catholic Church in Loup City. To this union five children were born. Alta and Clem lived and raised their family on a farm east of Loup City. Alta worked hard on the farm, dressing ducks and geese and selling them, milking cows alongside Clem, and selling cream to the local neighbors. Clem passed away on April 9, 2008. Alta continued to live on the farm for the rest of her life.
Alta was a member of St. Josaphat’s Catholic Church in Loup City. She was a devout Catholic who prayed the rosary often and always worried and prayed for her loved ones. She loved gardening, both flowers and a variety of vegetables, and she also enjoyed doing embroidery. Above all, Alta dearly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children: David Mostek and friend Kim Patrick of Fremont, Michael Mostek of Loup City, Andrew Mostek of Grand Island, and Patrick and Amy Mostek of Elm Creek. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Brandon and Tina Tuma, Kayann and David Skibinski, Denise and Ryan Kucera, Carmen and George Toman, Mason Mostek, Anthony and Brittany McClary, MacKayla and Tanner Hemmingsen, and Nickolas Mostek; 17 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Leona Bendykowski of Arcadia, Emily Gregoski of St. Paul, and JoAnn and Bernard Danczak of St. Paul; and her sister-in-law, Ellen Mostek of Loup City.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clem; daughter, Diane Tuma; parents Andrew and Gertrude Waskowiak; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rita and Paul Gorecki, Evelyn and Ray Gorecki, twin sister Adeline and Reginald Jonak, and Loretta and Ed Hulinsky; brothers-in-law, Melvin Bendykowski and Bill Gregoski; her in-laws, Michael and Teckla Mostek; and Clem’s siblings, Melvin Mostek, Florence and Gib Lewandowski, and Geraldine Mostek.
