Velma Kathleen Schoening

November 14, 1919 — April 22, 2012

Velma K. Schoening, 92, of Loup City, died Sunday, April 22, at the Rose Lane Home in Loup City. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Loup City. Pastor Russell Barelmann will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Loup City. Visitation will be held one hour before time of services at the church. Peters Funeral Home of Loup City is in charge of arrangements. Miss Schoening was born on Nov. 14, 1919, at Loup City, the daughter of Emil J. and Ethel L. (Chapman) Schoening. She is survived by one brother, Jack R. Schoening of Baker City, OR. She is also survived by two nephews, Randall Schoening of Eugene, OR and Joachim Schoening of Venetta, OR; and one niece, Kate Brooks of Baker City, OR. Velma grew up in Loup City where she graduated from Loup City High School in 1937. After attending two years of college she moved to Omaha in 1940, where she worked as a secretary for 43 years. In 1983 she retired from the Peter Kiewit Sons, Inc. and in March 1984 she moved to Kearney where she resided for two years. She returned to Loup City in March 1986 to care for her mother, who passed away in 1991. She moved to Rose Lane Home in January 1998, where she lived the rest of her life. Velma was a member of First Presbyterian Church, PEO, American Legion Auxiliary, Sherman County Historical Society, and Health Care Auxiliary, all of Loup City and the Nebraska State Historical Society. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Doris Schoening and an infant sister. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church in Loup City.
