Synfred J. Wozniak

Synfred J. “Fred” Wozniak, 95, of St. Paul died Thursday, April 10, 2014, at the Grand Island Veterans Home in Grand Island.   Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Ray Kosmicki will officiate. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul with graveside military honors by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul.   Visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the church, with a 5 p.m. vigil service.   Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of the arrangements.   Mr. Wozniak was born on Aug. 22, 1918, on the family farm near Elba, the son of Vince and Anna (Wolinski) Wozniak.   He was united in marriage to Margaret M. Kezeor on May 4, 1948, at Farwell.   He is survived by his wife, Marge Wozniak of St. Paul; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Mike Kreis of Doniphan and Annette and Roger Ogard of St. Paul; one son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Lori Wozniak of St. Paul; and one half-sister, Rosemary Zeleski of Salt Lake City, Utah.   He also leaves to cherish his memory, 11 grandchildren, Kevin, Shelly, Brad, Michelle, Jenny, Cory, Shannon, Stephanie, Jeffrey, Alanna and Hilary; 21 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.   Fred attended District No. 8 Howard County rural school. Upon completing his education he farmed with his family and later moved to Grand Island where he worked for Construction Material Company.   He was a World War II Army veteran having served from July 1941 to Oct. 1945. He was stationed for two years in Panama and then to Europe, where he served in Scotland, England, France and Belgium. Upon his discharge he returned to St. Paul and began working for the State of Nebraska Department of Roads.   After he and Marge were married they first lived in St. Paul, later moving to a farm near Boelus. They later returned to St. Paul where he continued to work for the Department of Roads until his retirement in 1984. He was very dedicated to his job with the State.   He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119, both of St. Paul.   He enjoyed golfing, playing cards, gardening and taking care of farm animals.   He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, George Waltman; half-sisters, Luella Jensen and Josephine Gorecki; half-brothers, Clarence Waltman and Paul Waltman; step-sisters, Mayme Pabian and Adelaide Jensen; and a grandson, Johann Wozniak. Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
