Mary L. Spotanski

Mary L. Spotanski, 86, of Ashton, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2018, at the Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Francis Catholic Church in Ashton. The Rev. Richard L. Piontkowski and Deacon Randy Lewandowski will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in the St. Francis Catholic Cemetery in Ashton. Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church, with a 7 p.m. vigil service. Peters Funeral Home of Loup City is assisting the family. Mary was born on Sept. 20, 1932, on a farm near Arcadia, the daughter of Joe and Clara (Eurek) Janulewicz. She grew up on the family farm southwest of Arcadia, attended District No. 60 rural school and then attended high school. She was united in marriage to Hubert M. Spotanski on April 15, 1950, in Loup City. The couple farmed in the Ashton area and she also worked at Delicious Foods in Grand Island for several years. In 1976, the couple moved into Ashton. Mary babysat for her nieces and nephews and later for her great nieces. Hubert died on Sept. 11, 1991. She continued to live in Ashton until moving to Seneca Sunrise in Ravenna in 2009. In 2012, she moved to Rose Lane Home in Loup City, where she lived the rest of her life. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Ashton and its Council of Catholic Women. Mary enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, BINGO, fishing, polka music and hosting family get togethers. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Marie Richardson of Ashton; two sisters, Maxine Riskowski of Omaha and Betty Czarnek of Brick, New Jersey; Hubert's siblings and spouses, Harry and Kathy Spotanski, Alozy and Darlene Spotanski and Marj Spotanski, all of Loup City, Alice Kwiatkowski of Litchfield and Virginia and Merlin McRoberts of Omaha; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Hubert, she was preceded in death by her parents; son, Michael John Spotanski; son-in-law, Stephen Richardson; and two brothers, Tom and Henry Janulewicz. Memorials are suggested to the Polish Heritage Center, Friends of Paplin or to the family's choice.
