Lucille E. Mahrt

Lucille E. Mahrt, 101, of Grand Island, formerly of St. Paul, died Sunday, June 25, 2017, at the Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island. Services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 6, 2017, at the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Martha Voigt will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn-Hillcrest Cemetery in Omaha. Visitation will be held one hour before time of service at the church. Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is assisting the family. Lucille was born on July 18, 1915, on a farm north of St. Paul, the daughter of Henry and Margaret (Ogard) Jorgensen. She attended District No. 21 rural school. The family later moved to Cushing where she continued her education and was a 1934 graduate of St. Paul High School. She then taught in Howard County rural schools for the next seven years. She was united in marriage to Charles Hoffman on Nov. 8, 1942, at Pasadena, CA. The couple lived in several states during their marriage. Charles died on Feb. 1, 1961. Lucille then moved to Grand Island and later St. Paul while working at JC Penney’s. She was united in marriage to Hermann Mahrt on Dec. 17, 1972, at St. Paul. The couple lived in St. Paul and Lucille worked out of her home making draperies. Hermann died on Oct. 14, 1984. She continued to live in St. Paul until 2007 when she moved to Riverside Lodge Retirement Community in Grand Island. In Dec. 2014, she moved to the Wedgewood Care Center, where she lived the rest of her life. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Women, Carl Mogensen American Legion Auxiliary Unit 119, the Howard County Medical Center Auxiliary and the Order of the Eastern Star, all of St. Paul. Lucille loved playing pinochle and pitch and later in life she enjoyed playing solitaire. She made made beautiful scrapbooks and thoroughly documented her life for her family. Lucille made numerous quilts for all her family and one special quilt she made was of all the houses she had lived in throughout her life. She also enjoyed reading the newspaper and would always read the headlines out loud. She is survived by one daughter, Marydee Lameraux of Winter Haven, FL; two sons and three daughters-in-law, James and Kathy Hoffman of The Villages of Florida, Cinde Hoffman of Grand Island and Allen Hoffman and Mary Escobar of Grand Island; 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; stepchildren and spouses, Norma Mahrt of Wolbach, Kathy Mahrt of Wolbach, Dee Mahrt of Alabama, Ron and Sharon Spence of Martell, Butch and Jane Spence of Elk Horn, IA and Leonard Dietz of Laramie, WY; one sister, DeAnne O'Hara of Grand Island; and two brothers and one sister-in-law, Darold and Dorothy Jorgensen and Eugene Jorgensen, all of St. Paul. In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Joel Hoffman; one son-in-law, Richard Lameraux; stepsons, Alvin, Delmer, Melvin and Jerome Mahrt; stepdaughters, JoAnn Dietz and Donna Perry; two sisters, Helen Goering and Phyllis Miller; and two brothers, Dale Jorgensen and Lyle Jorgensen. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church.
