Gary C. Schwenk

Gary C. Schwenk, 71, of St. Libory, died Thursday, June 21, 2012, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Libory's Catholic Church in St. Libory. The Revs. Sidney B. Bruggeman, Ray Kosmicki, James Janovec and Deacon Donald Placke will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church, with a 7 p.m. vigil service. Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Schwenk was born on Sept. 25, 1940, in Grand Island, the son of Albert C. and Clara E. (Wissing) Schwenk. He was united in marriage to Ann E. “Betty” Assendrop on Feb. 27, 1965, at St. Libory. He is survived by his wife, Betty of St. Libory; three daughters and one son-in-law, Amy & Todd Doom of Wagner, SD, Molly Dove of St. Libory and Kathryn Kurz of St. Libory; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Kay & Bill Scarborough of Omaha and Jan and Bill Sack of St. Paul; and one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ed and Donna Assendrop of St. Libory. He also leaves to cherish his memory five grandchildren, Margaret Grace Doom, Kathryn Rose Doom, Bridgette Rose Dove, Leslie Albert Kasson and Conner Edward Kurz. Gary grew up on the family farm near St. Libory and attended St. Libory's Parochial School and graduated from St. Paul High School in 1958. After completing his education he farmed with his father. He served in the Nebraska National Guard from 1963 to 1969. He and Betty lived and farmed west of St. Libory their entire married lives. Gary was a lifetime member of St. Libory's Catholic Church; was a board member and past president of the St. Paul/Dannebrog Farmers Union; a committee member of the ASC; and member of the Platt-Duetsche and Eagles of Grand Island. Gary loved farming and raising his cattle. He also loved to dance and playing cards, especially with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Sandra Jean Schwenk; his in-laws, Edward and Mary Assendrop; and two nephews, Scott Scarborough and Russell Sack. Memorials are suggested to St. Libory's Catholic Church or the St. Libory Fire Department and EMT's.
