Esther A. Nietfeld

Esther A. Nietfeld, 83, of St. Libory, died Sunday, July 11, 2010, at the Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Worms. The Rev. Daniel Bremer will officiate. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Worms. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church. Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Nietfeld was born on Nov. 20, 1926, near Chapman, the daughter of Julius and Hattie (Kaiser) Scheer. She was united in marriage to Donald V. Nietfeld on June 23, 1944, at Zion Lutheran Church in Worms. He preceded her in death. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Rev. Danny and Kathy Nietfeld of Bellevue and Jim and Nelida Nietfeld of Aurora; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Doneta Doehling of Omaha, Debra and Morris Weyers of Bethany, MO and Carol and Allen Spiehs of St. Libory; one sister, Wilma Papke of Grand Island; and two sisters-in-law, Frances Scheer of Grand Island and Mary Scheer of Cordoba. She also leaves to cherish her memory, 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Esther grew up on the family farm and attended Merrick County rural schools and Zion Lutheran parochial school in Worms. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church. After her marriage to Don, the couple first farmed north of Grand Island and later returned to the Nietfeld family farm southeast of St. Libory. She was a homemaker and assisted her husband with the farming and their dairy herd. She was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church where she was also a longtime Sunday School Teacher. She was a member of the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. Esther loved crosswords and putting puzzles together. She was a great cook and baker and enjoyed playing the piano and organ at home. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don on May 6, 2009; a son-in-law, John Doehling; two brothers, Harold and Robert Scheer; and one sister, Lilly Lundquist. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church or Zion Lutheran Sunday School.
