Carmella A. Mendyk, 87, of Loup City, formerly of Ashton, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009, at the Rose Lane Home in Loup City. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the St. Francis Catholic Church in Ashton. The Rev. Marty Egging will officiate. Burial will be in the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery in Paplin. Visitation will be Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church, with a 7 p.m. vigil service. Peters Funeral Home of Loup City is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Mendyk was born on Sept. 5, 1921, in Omaha, to Italian immigrants, Nick and Mary (Pane) Cavallaro. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louie W. Mendyk. She is survived by several nieces and nephews; and her caregivers and special friends, Craig and Joyce Kamler of Ashton. Carmella grew up in Omaha where she attended Mason School. She was united in marriage to Louie W. Mendyk in Omaha on Nov. 21, 1943. The couple lived in Omaha where she worked for Trailways Bus Line for a number of years cleaning buses and the main office at 18th and Leavenworth. In 1977, the couple retired and moved to an acreage in Ashton. Louie died on March 30, 2001. She continued to live in Ashton until Jan. 2006 when she moved to the Rose Lane Home in Loup City, where she lived the rest of her life. She was a member of the St. Francis Catholic Church in Ashton. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Tony and Joe; and two sisters, Sarah and Catherine. Memorials are suggested to the family’s choice.
