Barbara Panowicz, 82, of St. Paul, died unexpectedly, Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at her home. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Ray Kosmicki will officiate. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul. Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Peters Funeral Home in St. Paul, with a 6:30 p.m. vigil service. Mrs. Panowicz was born on Feb. 27, 1926, on the family farm near Elba, the daughter of Edward and Sophie (Graczyk) Pysczynski. She is survived by her husband, Albin E. Panowicz of St. Paul; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sister Mary Kay Panowicz OSB of Yankton, SD, Kristine and Dennis Inman of Albuquerque, NM and Geralyn and Ken Jirele of Glenwood, IA; one sister, Regina Moraczewski of St. Paul; and one brother-in-law, Roman Panowicz of Lincoln. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Jesse Tyser, Jaime Tyser, Ryan Inman and Jennifer Inman. Barbara grew up on the family farm and attended District No. 20 country school. She graduated from St. Paul High School in 1942 and then attended St. Paul Business College. She then worked for Dobry & Dobry Law Office and the Howard County Extension Office. She was united in marriage to Albin E. Panowicz on Jan. 28, 1947, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Elba. The couple farmed on the Pysczynski family farm from 1947 to 1956 and then lived in Central City and Fullerton. They moved to St. Paul in 1959, where she worked as a bookkeeper for Nowak Propane and the Fashionette, retiring in 1985. She liked to camp and attend country music festivals, crochet and quilt. She especially enjoyed making baby quilts, which she gave to immigrant babies in Yankton. Barbara was a very active member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and its Council of Catholic Women. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Bernard Eugene Panowicz; her brother-in-law, Dominic Moraczewski; and her sister-in-law, Maxine Panowicz. In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials are suggested to Sts. Peter & Paul New Parish Center Building Fund.
