Albert C. Schwenk

Albert C. Schwenk, 92, of St. Libory died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, at the Matelyn Retirement Community in St. Paul. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Libory’s Catholic Church in St. Libory. The Revs. Larry Coulter and Ray Kosmicki will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the church, with a 6 p.m. vigil service. Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Schwenk was born on Aug. 21, 1915, at Grand Island, the son of Charles and Emma (Gulzow) Schwenk. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara E. Schwenk; and an infant daughter, Sandra Jean Schwenk. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Betty Schwenk of St. Libory; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and Bill Scarborough of Omaha and Jan and Bill Sack of St. Paul; one brother and sister-in-law, Marvin and Kathy Schwenk of St. Libory; and one sister, Lenore Winter of Grand Island. He also leaves to cherish his memory 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, who lovingly referred to him as “Pope”. Albert grew up and received his education in the St. Libory and Worms areas and for a brief time near Kimball and north of St. Paul. He was united in marriage to Clara E. Wissing on Oct. 3, 1939, at St. Libory. The couple lived and farmed in the St. Libory area and in 1965, moved into St. Libory. Clara died on Oct. 10, 2002. Albert lived in his home until May 2004, when he moved to the Matelyn Retirement Community. He was a member of St. Libory’s Catholic Church; was a charter member of the St. Libory Volunteer Fire Department; the Platt-Duetsche Society of Grand Island; a member of the Howard County Historical Society; a director and longtime president of Union Grain Company of St. Libory; a founding member of the St. Libory Gun Club; a director of the Hall County German Mutual Insurance Company; a past member of the Howard County Zoning and Planning Board and a past member of the Howard County Soil and Water Conservation Board. In addition to his wife and infant daughter, Albert was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Scott Scarborough; infant twin great-grandchildren, Russell Sack, Jr. and Hailey Jo Sack; and one sister, Lois Evers, Albert loved his family very much and enjoyed hunting and fishing to the fullest extent. Memorials are suggested to the family’s choice.
