Vaughn Jay Scarborough

February 17, 1954 — February 4, 2018

Vaughn J. Scarborough, 63, of St. Paul, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018, at the Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul, after a courageous battle with pulmonary arterial hypertension. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. David Brehm will officiate. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church. Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is assisting the family. Vaughn was born on Feb. 17, 1954, in Grand Island, the son of Max E. and LaVonne R. (Nagorski) Scarborough. He grew up and lived in St. Paul where he attended Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic School and graduated from St. Paul High School in 1973. As a young teenager, he began working with his father and brothers in the family business, M.E. Scarborough & Sons Construction. He was united in marriage to Cindy L. Meyer on June 22, 1974, at Zion Lutheran Church in Worms. To this union four children were born. He was united in marriage to Carolyn M. Meyer on June 24, 1995, at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. Vaughn worked in the family construction business until 2000. He then worked at Sam's Club in Grand Island, Rochester Armored Car Company in Grand Island and then at the St. Paul Senior Center where he worked until 2015, when his health forced him to retire. Vaughn was very active in the St. Paul community. He was a 30 year member of the St. Paul Fire Department and was also a former EMT. He was a longtime member of the St. Paul Jaycee's and was active in the St. Paul Area Community Theater. He also served for many years on the GCA Days committee and assisted with the Museum of Nebraska League Baseball, where he designed the stadium wall at the museum. Vaughn enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, canoeing, playing softball, bowling, singing karaoke, flying remote control airplanes and scuba diving. In the past he had also served as a scuba diving instructor. He loved playing Santa Claus and enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow and attending their activities. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn of St. Paul; children and spouses, Courtney Sullivan of Grand Island, Heather and Loren Pearson of St. Paul, C.J. Scarborough and Jessica Jacobsen of St. Paul, and Missy and Mike Nelson of Grand Island; ten grandchildren, Tiara, Mackenzie, Shayla and Cedric Sullivan, Hensley and Brantley Pearson, Barrett Jacobsen, Skylee, Tycen and Kameron Nelson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Carolyn Scarborough of St. Paul and Wm. “Bill” and Kay Scarborough of Omaha; sister, Connie Becker of St. Paul; brother-in-law, Larry Houchin of Bronson, FL; Carolyn's brother and sisters-in-law, Colleen Meyer Brown of Godfrey, IL and Lyle and Mae Meyer of Waco,TX. He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, David Sullivan; sister, Geraldine Houchin; in-laws, Jess and C. Joan Meyer; brothers-in-law, Jerry Becker and Ray Meyer; nephew, Scott Scarborough; and infant niece and nephew, Angela and Allen Becker. Memorials are suggested to the St. Paul Senior Center or to the family's choice.
