Norma Jean Szatko

Norma J. Szatko, 82, of St. Paul, died Saturday, March 10, 2018, at the Greeley Care Home in Greeley. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 22, 2018, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Rayappa Konka will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery at St. Paul. Visitation will be from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at the church, with a rosary at 6 p.m. Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is assisting the family. Norma Jean was born on Nov. 18, 1935, in Louisville, Kentucky, the daughter of Buford D. and Margaret E. (Cahill) Witt. She grew up and received her education in Louisville, where she graduated from Presentation Academy. She then worked as a telephone operator. She met George J. Szatko, a Nebraska boy serving in the United States Army and stationed at Fort Knox. The couple was united in marriage on April 23, 1955, in Louisville. The couple first lived in Frankfurt, Germany. After George was discharged in 1957 they moved to Nebraska. Norma worked as a waitress at the St. Paul Legion Club while George served as the manager. She later also waitressed at Paul's Supper Club. For many years she worked as a sales clerk at The Fashionette in St. Paul. In 2015, Norma moved to the Greeley Care Home in Greeley, where she lived the rest of her life. She and George were married for close to 63 years. George preceded her in death just last month, on Feb. 13, 2018. She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and the Council of Catholic Women. She loved reading and spending time with her family. When her children were young she taught them to enjoy old scary movies, chew Juicy Fruit gum and drink Pepsi-Cola. Norma, like all of the Szatko family, enjoyed Hot Beef Sandwiches at the Skyline Cafe in St. Paul and loved her salad topped with Dorothy Lynch salad dressing. She is survived by a son, George J. Szatko, Jr. of Pace, FL; two daughters and sons-in-law, Trudy and Bruce Edwards of Tulsa, OK and Jeanne and Gregg Boyce of Show Low, AZ; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and seven siblings and spouses, Shirley Farley of Louisville, KY, Ruth Lamb of Moriarty, NM, Jimmy and Marie Witt of Louisville, KY, David Witt, Jr. of St. Johns, IL, Alberta and Bill Hainsworth of Ocala, FL, Paul Witt of Louisville, KY and Linda and Marty Huffman of Louisville, KY. In addition to her loving husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Anthony James “Tony” Szatko; and four sisters, Mary “Tee Tee” French, Joan Hudson, Patricia Isaac and Betty Ann Burkhead. Memorials are suggested to Sts. Peter & Paul Parish Life Center.
