Larry G. Kleine

Larry Gene Kleine, 72, of Grand Island, died Thursday, June 23, 2016, at his home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Bill Schroeder will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before time of services Tuesday at the church. Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Kleine was born on Nov. 14, 1943, near Tobias, the son of John Henry Gerhard and Lola Armeda (Stigge) Kleine. Larry attended Daykin Public School and graduated from Daykin High School in 1962. He also served in the Nebraska National Guard. He then attended Milford Technical School where he studied diesel technology. He was united in marriage to Karen D. Metcalf on June 7, 1964, at Plymouth. The couple first lived in Grand Island for a couple of years before moving to Superior for four years, after which they returned to Grand Island. Larry worked at International Harvester truck branch, which later became Hansen International. He then worked as a mechanic at Nebraska Truck Center for 23 years. In 1998, he began assisting his wife Karen, with their business, Kleine Funeral Home. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church. Larry enjoyed time spent with his children and grandchildren and loved time spent on the Kleine family farm. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Kristine and Glen Ankenman of Aurora, CO and Janet and Karl Stephen of Parker, CO; one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Sandi Kleine of Grand Island; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Elmer and Aletha Kleine of Daykin, LeRoy and Joyce Kleine of Omaha and LaVerne and Cathy Kleine of Fairbury; and one sister, Odetta Lintz of Beatrice. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Sandra Ankenman, Steven Ankenman, Marisa Stephen, Alexis Stephen, Jordan Kleine, Jessica Kleine and Jamie Kleine. Larry was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Karen, on Feb. 24, 2010; son, Kenneth Kleine; and sister, Esther Boyle. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Calvary Lutheran Church.
