Eric D. Maiefski

Eric D. Maiefski, 95, of Lincoln, died on Friday, Nov. 28, 2014, at Tabitha Health Care Center in Lincoln. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Ashton. The Rev. Marty Egging will officiate. Inurnment will be in the St. Francis Catholic Cemetery in Ashton. Peters Funeral Home of Loup City is assisting the family with arrangements. Mr. Maiefski was born on Nov. 9, 1919, in Ashton, the oldest son of Joseph and Frances (Maschka) Maiefski. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Melissa Maiefski of Lincoln. He is also survived by six grandchildren; Melissa Lopez and Trevor Lopez both of Tucson, AZ and Cody Maiefski, Caitlin Maiefski, Tristan Maiefski and Anneliese Maiefski all of Lincoln. As a young boy, Eric lived with his parents and brother, Alfred “Bud” Maiefski, in Ashton and Ogallala. He was a 1938 graduate of Ashton High School. In 1940, he joined the United States Navy and was the Honor Man of his class at Great Lakes Naval Station. He served in the Navy for 20 years. During World War II, he served on the USS Argonne at Pearl Harbor in 1941. Upon his retirement, he worked as a golf pro at Furnace Creek Country Club in Death Valley, California. Prior to joining the Navy, Eric married Marilyn Gile and adopted Bradley Maiefski. The couple later divorced. He was united in marriage to Shirley J. Owens on Nov. 6, 1962, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The couple moved to Loup City, where Eric worked at the Keystone Lumber Company. They had two children, Patti Jane and Eric Joseph “Joe”. In 1978, the family moved to Tucson, where Eric enjoyed golfing and spending time with his six grandchildren. In 2010, he and Shirley moved to Lincoln, where Eric took care of Shirley until her death on Oct. 12, 2011. In addition to his wife, Shirley, he was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Patti Lopez; adopted son, Bradley Maiefski; brother, Bud Maiefski; and grandson, Preston Maiefski. Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Catholic Church.
