Elton F. Scheer

December 20, 1925 — August 28, 2013

Elton F. Scheer, 87, of St. Libory, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at his home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Worms. The Rev. Craig K. Niemeier will officiate. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Worms. Visitation will be Friday at the church from 5 to 7 p.m.. Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Scheer was born Dec. 20, 1925, on the family farm near Chapman, the son of Otto and Marie “Mamie” (Peters) Scheer. He is survived by his wife, Betty; two daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and Ron Turner of Augusta, KS and Candace and Ron Ludden of Rolla, MO; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Stanley and Laurie Scheer of Grand Island, Lyle and Karin Scheer of Golden, CO and Gordon Scheer of Chapman; one sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Albert Kurz of Worms. He also leaves to cherish his memory 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Melvin and DeAnna Glause of Estes Park, CO, John Glause of Chapman, and Wanda and Maynard Hershberger of Lincoln. Elton lived on the same section of Merrick County ground his entire life. He attended Merrick County rural schools, Zion Lutheran parochial school and graduated from Chapman High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army as a sharpshooter from 1945 to 1946. He was united in marriage to Betty J. Glause on June 1, 1947, at Zion Lutheran Church in Worms. The couple farmed and ran a dairy east of Worms for 50 years. After retiring, he continued to live on the farm the rest of his life. He took pride in his farm, which has been in the Scheer family since 1883. He was a devoted Christian member of Zion Lutheran Church his entire life, having held many positions and offices in the church. Elton enjoyed wood carving and building things out of wood and his favorite saying was “You can't learn any younger.” He was a devoted family man that will be dearly missed by his loved ones. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Ervin and Lorena Scheer; nephew, Dennis Kurz; in-laws, John and Linda Glause; sisters-in-law, Betty Glause and Phyllis Glause; and one brother-in-law, Bryan Lacy. Memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church.
