Agnes M. Lempke

Agnes M. Lempke, 98, of Grand Island, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island. The Revs. Mark Maresh and Tom Ryan will officiate. Burial will be in St. Libory's Catholic Cemetery in St. Libory. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m., with a 6 p.m. vigil service at the church. Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Lempke was born on Oct. 24, 1915, at St. Mary, Nebraska, the daughter of Florian and Martha (Hindera) Masur. She was united in marriage to Charles J. Lempke on Oct. 16, 1945, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St. Mary. He preceded her in death on Sept. 14, 1982. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Dennis Schuster of Grand Island; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Joe Lempke of Hastings and James and Linda Lempke of Ogallala. She also leaves to cherish her memory 9 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Agnes received her education in St. Mary and spent her early life in St. Mary and Lincoln. After she and Charles were married they moved to Grand Island where he was a construction worker. They also lived in St. Paul and moved to St. Libory in September 1952. She worked at local cafes and the Cornhusker Army Ammunitions Plant and Delicious Foods in Grand Island. After Charles died she continued to live in St. Libory until 1995, when she moved to Grand Island. She was a active member of St. Libory's Catholic Church and CCW for many years. After moving to Grand Island she was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and it's CCW and Quilting Group. She also was a member of the Platt-Duetsche, Sunset Club and the Carl Mogensen American Legion Auxiliary Unit 119 of St. Paul. Agnes enjoyed playing cards, BINGO, crocheting and quilting. She loved Lawrence Welk, family reunions and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter and infant son; two sisters, Sister Sylvia Masur and Gertrude Peschel; and six brothers, Alex, Leonard, Matt, Felix, August and Mark Masur. Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
